Murphy Bed History
If you have no idea where Murphy beds came from or what they are, I can give you a little peek at their history. When I heard of these beds, my first thought was that it was created by a guy named Murphy. Go figure, it was. William L. Murphy was one of the creators of these beds even though they have been around since 1899. Even before then, Thomas Jefferson had his bed hanging out of the way by ropes and hooks, making it the original “hidden” bed.
It wasn’t until 1899 when Leonard Bailey was awarded the patent for the concept of a folding bed and it wasn’t until a while later that William Murphy invented the bed’s folding point, one of the most important parts. He used an old doorjamb from a closet and some hinges from a door. With these, he built a pivot that allowed the bed to attach to a wall and fold for easy storage.?
During the turn of the 20th century, Murphy moved to San Francisco and rented a small one-room apartment. This is what inspired him to turn his invention into a business-Murphy beds. Unfortunately, his original bed took up most of his apartment and it was difficult to have guests over. So he began to play around with the folding bed idea.
