The Casper Mattress

The Casper Mattress is an affordable product made by innovative minds in the US and UK to create a sleeping surface that has been deemed one of the “best inventions” upon its release by TIME magazine. Layered foam is combined to create a springy, soft, yet contouring sleep surface for any type of sleeper. Because of this construction a box spring isn’t needed either, saving you even more money overall

Boasting the idea balance and support for all sleep positions, the mattress only comes in one density and firmness level, making your shopping experience simple and hassle free. This is especially true since it comes with a 100 night sleep trail during which you can return it (for free) if it just doesn’t suit you.

Even though the bed is designed to lay upon any sort of bed surface without sacrificing your sleep comfort, the company does suggest that it will keep you sleeping better over time with the use of a solid or slatted platform style bed.

Platform Beds

Platform beds are an alternative, raised bed frame that differs from a traditional bed frame in that is has a fairly solid surface that provide whole mattress support and removes the need of a boxspring. Although platform beds have always been around, their popularity has recently risen due to the increase in softer, more viscous materials being used in mattress construction.

Foam mattresses in particular often need more support than what a boxspring can provide as it is constructed to conform to the pressure that is applied to it. Therefore a supportive foundation is required to keep the foam from breaking down more quickly due to uneven pressure that many more traditional mattress supports offer.

Solid vs. Slatted Support

Platform beds come in one of two support designs. Some have a flat, fairly solid surface upon which to place your mattress, and others have closely spaced slats that you may be able to adjust or even add to. There are many pros and cons to either design, but they both are created to hold your mattress up properly without the use of any sort of additional foundation.

Although most solid surfaces have slits for airflow, they only provide a surface upon which your mattress sits without any sort of give or flex. Depending on the combination of the thickness of your mattress and your weight, you may or may not notice a comfort difference with the use of the solid platform.

The slatted supports do provide a bit of flex for your mattress to rest upon, and also an increase in breathability for a cooler sleep. Slats should be closer than 4 inches to provide proper support however, although adding or removing slats will affect the overall feel of support.

Material

Not only are platform beds often more affordable than traditional bed frames, they also can boast some neat features.

  • Storage
  • Enclosed
  • Adjustable

You can often find storage drawers along the sides or foot of platform beds. Their boxy design and lower profiles allow for storage space that can really come in handy, especially if you have limited room for bedding or other necessities in your closet. These drawers serve as a handy place for extra blankets and sheets, as well as long term, easily accessible storage areas when needed.

The enclosed platform designs are especially nice for you allergy sufferers. When the space under the bed is closed off, then dust and other allergens are unable to avoid your cleaning days by hiding under the bed any longer.

Adjustable beds are very popular due to how they help increase comfort, and aid in movement. Most platform beds easily can encompass the machinery that makes your mattress ergodynamic, or is made to purposely do so.

How to Choose the Platform Bed for Your Needs

Now that you have the Casper Mattress of your dreams, you need to decide the best platform bed for your needs. Since sleep is such a personal comfort, you may want to consider the following before making a final choice:

  • checkPersonal weight and sleep positions– As mentioned, a solid surface may cause compression in your mattress that could translate into pressure points for you. If you are of a heavier body type, then the slatted beds may be your best option. Furthermore, if you are a side sleeper, you will most likely be more sensitive to weight distribution within the mattress, and a solid surface may also cause issues.
  • checkHowever, the additional firmness a solid platform offers may be a good choice for back and stomach sleeper as they need uplifting support for proper spinal alignment. Available space for bed placement- Platform beds can be very simple, and stark in their design, or more ornate, and include head and even footboards. They are often a good choice for smaller spaces, but your choices should reflect the space you have available, as well as your own personal preferences.
  • checkDo you need storage space? Extra storage is always a perk, especially if you have limited cupboard or closet space. Small spaces also benefit from underbed storage, and so you may want to consider a bed that incorporates that into the design.

I found that my favorite to use with the casper is actually the Zinus Ironline. I lot of people overlook it for some reason but in the end as long as it does not make noise and looks nice it’s cool with me.
