Loom and Leaf is a luxury memory foam mattress offered by the Saatva Company, a relatively new (launched in 2015), quick growing, online retailer that prides itself in eco-friendly materials and construction. Compared to the leading companies in memory foam mattress construction, Loom and Leaf offers their products for significantly less as an online retailer, knocking out the ‘brick and mortar’ mark-ups that often occur on the showroom floor.
Plus, all mattresses come with complete set-up, and not in a box on your doorstep to ensure proper handling of materials and airing of the product. Mattress sizes are available as a twin and twin xl, through California king, with two available firmness levels: L&L Relaxed Firm, and L&L firm. Despite there being no extra soft mattress availability, the company stands behind their choices to provide the most physically healthy options, and quality of foam choices, to give you the most bang for your buck over the years.
This is a product geared specifically for sleepers who want the ‘hug’, contouring, and pressure relief attributed to memory foam mattresses, but also prefer a medium to firm mattress rather than a soft sink.
A rigid solid support foundation is also available for all sizes except the twin XL that comes in both standard and low profile heights.

For such a young company, Saatva has grown over the last few years from a mid-sized mattress company to one of the largest online-only retailers in the country with over 19 factories and 135 fulfillment centers around the United States (they also offer delivery in certain parts of Canada). Their popularity has grown from an affordability and availability online sales produce by cutting out the extra cost of commissions and retail markups.
Also going for them is an innovative technology and transparency concerning the materials used in the production of their products that some companies just don’t offer. High quality, mid-density foam layers are used throughout the construction of the entire mattress to provide support where needed. Foams are rated on both density and softness, but it is the density rating that defines the quality of the material being used.
Highly dense foams not only weigh more, they last longer, and do not break down as easily under pressure to leave ‘memory indentations’ over time. The foam used by this company also certified by CertiPUR-US, a standard in the foam industry that means the foam stands up to rigorous criteria involving performance, emissions, and environmental stewardship.
Construction
The construction of the Loom and Leaf Mattress is probably the company's biggest selling point due to their use of open celled plant based foams and multiple layers. These are all made within the US in order to keep the product from being shipped moist or shrink wrapped after their making. This keeps the process stable, and result in little to no off gassing through the entire process.
The first layer you come in contact with is the quilted covering woven using organic cotton and natural thistle flame retardant rather than chemical processes. This also includes a five-eighths inch layer of foam for extra comfort. Below that your first foam layer of any substance is a 2 inch, 4 lb density layer that is incorporated into their patented gel-on-gel design to provide a cooling sensation and consistent airflow. The gel used is of the kind found in burn units and hospitals and is laminated onto the lumbar section of the mattress which is where most body heat is contained.
The next 2.5 inch layer is a visco-elastic memory foam that weighs in at a 5 lb density and is what provides the deep, contouring support that memory foam fans are searching for. This is followed by 2 inch transition loft pad that helps to transfer weight and heat throughout the layers. The final layer is a 5.5 inch high density foam core that supports the above layers.
Overall you get a full 6.5 inches of specialty foams and gels supported by a dense 5.5 inch bottom layer.
Comfort
Despite the lack of range into softness levels, the high loft, quilted cover provides the initial softness before sinking into the visco-elastic form. Reviews mention that even though the memory foam ‘hug’ isn’t as deep as other brands, it does contour nicely and provide pressure point relief.
Depending on your preference for a softer or more firm mattress, you have two choices as mentioned earlier. The L&L Relaxed Firm mattress is rated in a 4.7 to 7.3 out of 10 range based on personal preference and is considered ‘not too soft, and not to hard’. Consumers consider this a well supported, combination sleeper mattress that seems to be comfortable for any sleep position.
The L&L Firm is for back and stomach sleepers who need extra support and rates in between 7.9 and 9.0 out of 10 for firmness. The reason the company stays within this range is due to their claim that anything above 9.0 is too firm for healthy joint support and sleep comfort, and anything below 4.5 results in an unhealthy lack of support and can result in the use of poor quality materials to attempt to ‘soften’ up the bed.
Motion transfer is practically non-existent as well, which helps keep you sleeping soundly if your mattress is disturbed through the night.
Heat Retention
Memory foam mattresses are notorious for heat retention complaints, however despite digging through reviews I have been unable to find any complaints about heat. Because of this I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest this is due to their gel technology that was created to specifically address this issue.
In detail, the cooling gel used is a high quality medical gel and is used in two different ways to help you experience the coolest sleep possible. The first is the cooling gel layer that is laminated into the center third of the mattress to address the warmest areas of the body. Then it is swirled into the top 2 inch layer to further promote a restful sleep.
On top of this, the contoured foam layers help keep air in circulation to move heat away, and allow cool air in.
Maintenance, Care, and Warranty
Due to the nature of online shopping, many companies now offer in home sleep trials, and Loom and Leaf are no exception. Their 120 in home trial starts after purchase and delivery and provides you 120 days to return the mattress at no extra cost and a full refund minus the original delivery fee. Furthermore, if you have changed your mind over the firmness level and would like an exchange, you may do so with no restocking fee and only a delivery charge.
Their 15 year warranty is amongst the longest in the industry and is non-prorated, meaning they will completely replace your mattress at no cost for the first 2 years, and years 3-15 will repair and recover for the cost of shipping ($99 each way). They also offer, separately, a fairness replacement option that allows you to keep your original mattress and purchase a new mattress at a reduced price.
Obviously liquids and mattresses do not mesh well together, and this is especially true of foams which can deteriorate overtime with moisture. Any spill should be immediately blotted up and dried as liquid damage may void your warranty. Due to this you should always use a water resistant or waterproof mattress protector. The mattress should also be kept on either a platform bed or an acceptable metal frame, or the warranty may also be invalidated due to insignificant support.
Although the foam mattress can not be flipped due to its construction, it should be rotated to help provide consistent weight shifts upon the surface through the life of the mattress.
Consumer Proof
As a relatively young company, most reviews are found within the company website, but due to the mattress popularity, it has been getting some individualized attention and personalized, detailed reviews (such as these) are becoming more easy to find. All reviews rate this particular product high in their initial reaction for comfort level, ease of delivery and return, customer support, and coolness.
Of course there are no reviews commenting on the longevity of the product as of yet, but the future looks promising for the company.
Conclusion
Overall it’s hard to find anything to criticize concerning this product. Reviews are overwhelmingly positive, and it seems like the company is on the right track meeting consumer needs through their innovative design, simple choices, and affordability.
