The first question you should ask yourself before you go out and buy just any bed is, “what makes a good mattress?”. A lot of people are stumped when it comes to this question because they honestly have no idea. Support
Your mattress quality should be quite well if it’s going to support you the way you need while you’re sleeping. Innerspring
If you like a bed with a little bit of bounce to it while remaining supportive, an innerspring mattress is something you may want to consider. They tend to be bouncier and may be better suited for heavier folks, especially if the coil gauges are thicker for the better amount of support. Today, innerspring mattresses are made with outer layers of foam or fiberfill to avoid springs poking through the mattress after a certain amount of time, ensuring a long lasting supportiveness.
Memory Foam
If you would rather have something a little more firm with less bounce to the supportiveness, memory foam would be the way to go in this case, especially if you choose the extra firm option. The lasting support of these mattresses will all depend on how thick the support layer is and how dense it is. Anything between 3-5 pounds per cubic foot is considered ideal.
Latex
Latex is very similar to memory foam, but it has more of a springy feel to it. If it’s completely natural and comes right from the rubber tree, it’s going to cost you a pretty penny. But, these are antimicrobial, resistant to dust mites, mold, and the overall lifespan of these are incredible. They can either be made of Dunlop latex, which is more dense and heavier, or Talalay, which is softer. Both of them will give you fantastic support over a course of many years.

Personally, I don’t like to sleep hot. I find it to be excruciatingly uncomfortable and I end up tossing and turning. Luckily, a lot of the best beds on the market offer some kind of cooling technology that helps to regulate your body temperature as you are sleeping. Mattress Lifespan
The warranty of your mattress is very important. A good quality mattress should should last you at least 8-10 years. The warranty of the bed is all just a marketing ploy. If you read the fine print, the only thing it covers is a manufacturer’s defect, which is probably going to pop up in about a year. The other concern is that if you don’t use some kind of mattress protector or matching foundation, it could void your warranty.
Honestly, I look for warranties that offer 20-30 year warranties with no fine print or other hoops that you have to jump through. It’s recommended that your mattress should be replaced once every 5-7 years, but if it’s taken care of well, it could last longer than that.

I covered this briefly above, but I kind of want to get a little more in depth about them and what they really have to offer in terms of being the best types of mattresses.
Memory Foam
Memory foam mattresses are probably the most popular on the market because of their wide price range and their high availability. They are made in any size you could possibly imagine, they can be made with gel foams for temperature regulation, come in a variety of firmnesses, and they offer motion isolation features. They also have the amazing ability to conform to your body and provide pressure relief and proper spinal alignment.
Unfortunately, memory foam does have its undesirable features. Some of them can come with an initial odor and require off gassing time. If they are CertiPUR-US Certified, they usually don;t have this issue. If the bed doesn’t offer temperature regulating features, they will sleep very hot and may require the use of a cooling mattress pad.
Innerspring
These are still very commonly found in most homes today because of their affordability and availability. With these, there are firmness options available, but not as many as you would find with memory foam mattresses. These are generally very familiar to the consumer, so they tend to lean towards them because it’s something they know about, but it’s not always the best option.
Innerspring beds have a below average lifespan because of the lack of strength in the coils. They also have a below average ability to conform to the body like memory foam can and there’s less of a motion isolation factor, which is rather disappointing. Fortunately, the memory foam/innerspring hybrid mattresses can void out all of these issues, but they do tend to be rather pricey and very heavy.
Latex
Natural latex mattresses are very good for those who like to live “green”. They come from the sap of the rubber tree and are naturally hypoallergenic, antimicrobial, resistant to mold, dust mites, and are generally just much cleaner. They are usually customizable in most cases and there are many firmness options available. The one thing that tops all other mattresses when it comes to latex is that they are much more durable.
Unfortunately, they don’t do very well with temperature regulation and they have a very limited availability. If you want something that’s more readily available, you could opt for a synthetic version of these, but they aren’t as “green” as natural ones. The natural latex mattresses also tend to be rather heavy, so it may be hard for you to move it around.
