The Best Organic Mattress For You
Over the years, organic everything has been making an appearance in grocery stores, retail stores, and now, mattress stores. But here’s the main question-why would you need an organic mattress? Does it really matter what you sleep on? To some people, maintaining an all organic lifestyle is as important as Christmas to a 4-year old, even if it means wearing organic clothing and sleeping on an organic bed. So, if you’re all about that lifestyle, i’ve composed a list of organic mattress reviews for you to check out.

What is "Organic"?
In terms of furniture, like mattresses, organic means that whatever plant fibers are in the bedding, were grown without the use of pesticides and processed without harmful chemicals. If the mattress is made with wool. Leather, or down, then the animal would have to be fed on a pesticide-free diet to make it “green”. You should know, though, that 100% organic mattress do not exist. In order for it to be certified organic, it has to be at least 95% natural latex.
How is it Helpful?
Some of you can see how organic foods would be beneficial, but how can mattresses that are “green” be better for you? You see, the materials that are inside of normal mattresses contain pollutants. A lot of memory foam mattresses are made from polyurethane, which contains methylene chloride. This chemical has the ability to cause cardiovascular and respiratory issues, memory loss, dizziness, and headaches.
So, by looking for mattresses that are made up of organic properties, you’ll have better peace of mind knowing that you and your family are safe from inhaling these toxic chemicals. But, traditional mattresses are made up of more than just one harmful chemical. Here are the ones that you should look out for:
- Formaldehyde: This is usually a byproduct of chemical reactions. This can cause respiratory distress and headaches.
- Acetone: This can be toxic if inhaled in large amounts. It may also irritate the skin.
- Methyl Benzene: Has the ability to affect the nervous system.
- Dimethylformamide: Possibly embryotoxic and carcinogenic, this has been linked to liver damage and skin irritation.
- Vinylidene Chloride: This is a possible carcinogen and has been linked to respiratory issues.
- Fire Retardants made from boric acid, modacrylic fiber, melamine resin, chlorinated TRIS, and brominated fire retardants or PBDE’s.
Types of Organic Mattresses & What to Look for
A lot of the time, mattress companies will claim that their product is organic, but when you look into the ingredients, you’ll find that it’s not. The easiest way to figure out if something is really organic is to know what to look for. If a company claims that their mattress contains absolutely no VOC’s, be suspicious. VOC’s cannot be completely eliminated from memory foam. They can be considered “low”, but that’s it.
Latex
What is a natural latex mattress? 100% latex mattresses are about as close to organic as you can possibly get. Organic latex is made from the rubber tree. It’s harvested by tapping the sap of the Hevea Brasiliensis. The sap is then whipped up and turned into latex foam. Organic latex foams are hypoallergenic, naturally mold and moisture resistant, and dust mite resistant.
Don’t be fooled, though. If you are looking at a mattress and it has the Green certification, it doesn’t mean that it’s truly organic. This certification is just a limitation as to how high the allowable maximum emission for multiple chemicals are, which is regulated by the government-there’s your first red flag.
Also, be aware of anything that says it’s blended with synthetic latex. This mixture is cheaper and it contains clays, glues, and other toxic materials. It will not have the hypoallergenic, antifungal, or antibacterial properties of 100% latex.
Plant Based Memory Foam
Plant based memory foam is another good option if you are looking for a more healthy mattress. As I said earlier, you aren’t going to find a 100% organic mattress, but you will find ones that are healthier for your body and home. Plant based memory foam replaces petroleum products with plant derived oils.
Most of these types of mattresses have been known to show improvement with breathability and heat-retention issues. They are all Certi-PUR certified foams which are free from chemicals like formaldehyde, PDBE’s. CFC’s, Phthalates, and are all low in VOCs. All of these have been known to be a cause of concern in traditional memory foams.
Cotton Innerspring
If you want to completely stay away from the memory foams, an organic innerspring mattress the route to take. These mattresses offer the added support you need while remaining environmentally friendly. These beds are made with organic cotton, which means that it’s made without pesticides that are harmful to you.
Obviously, you can’t have organic springs, but the padding that’s inside what matters. If you would prefer another type of padding, you can go for wool. The wool is chemical-free and comes off of an organic-fed animal. The wool isn’t dyed or bleached, making it that much safer.
